The Legal And Regulatory Structure Prevailing in the UK Related To Data Privacy And Public Surveillance

Privacy is the right of an individual or a group of individuals to choose when, how and to what extent data or information about them is communicated to or intercepted by others (Pelteret, M. & Ophoff, J., 2016, p. 280). The UK’s key pieces of legislation governing data protection and privacy are the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 (‘the Act’). The law has, however, granted the UK government the powers to monitor the communications of even the people who aren’t suspected of breaking any law (Human Rights Watch, 2014).
